Gallery: Dermot Bannon transforms butcher shop into dream home

In the new series of Room To Improve, architect Dermot Bannon returns with four new designs for four incredible properties.

With soaring costs on materials around the country and budgets being pushed, Quantity Surveyor Claire Irwin has to work harder to make sure everyone gets their dream home on budget and on time. To achieve this, Claire will have to keep Dermot on his toes.

The first stop for the duo is Charlestown in Co Mayo where Karen Mulligan hopes to revive her childhood home.

Born and raised in this village, in the family business that was a home as well as her Dad's butcher’s shop, Karen is eager to get back to her roots having spent 14 years living and working in London.

The derelict building will need a top to toe renovation to make this old abattoir a dream home.

While it may be easier - and potentially cheaper - to build a new house on land further out, moving to the heart of the community encourages growth and connection.

"The first episode is about derelict houses, but also the unused and derelict buildings in our towns and villages," he insists. "The more people who choose to live in the town, the more facilities the town will have. Karen was a huge advocate of that."
